Trump Describes Nigeria ISIS Airstrikes as “Christmas Present”

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Friday characterized recent military operations against ISIS (Daesh) positions in Nigeria as a festive retaliation, describing the action as a “Christmas present” directed at the extremist organization.

Speaking on a radio, Trump claimed that “Tens of thousands of Christians” are being killed in Nigeria and stated that he had previously cautioned the Nigerian leadership about potential repercussions. He emphasized that his administration had delivered clear warnings before authorizing military measures.

Recalling his directive, Trump said, "I said yesterday, 'Hit them on Christmas Day. It will be a Christmas present," framing the timing of the assault as deliberate. He explained that US troops struck ISIS forces “hard” across several areas, denouncing the militants as “terrible” and “butchers.”

Trump further underscored the intensity of the attack by stating, "They really got hit hard yesterday," and added, "They got a very bad Christmas present." His remarks highlighted what he portrayed as significant damage inflicted on the group.

In a separate conversation with a media outlet, Trump revealed that the operation had initially been scheduled for Wednesday but was delayed to Christmas Day to enhance its “symbolic” impact. He said, "They didn’t think that was coming ... Every camp got decimated," suggesting the strikes achieved surprise and widespread destruction.

The president later announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the United States had carried out strikes against ISIS targets in northwest Nigeria on Thursday. US Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed that the mission was launched “at the request of Nigerian authorities” in Sokoto State, resulting in the deaths of “multiple ISIS terrorists,” according to a statement shared on the US social media company X.
